Educational level: academic

Duration: 6 months

Context

Within the area of medical systems, DEMCON has acquired and started daughter companies which sell devices and technology to end-users, like Finapres, Macawi and DEMCON Medical Robotics. With DEMCON Medical Robotics, the goal is to commercialize products focussing on image guided interventions, meaning minimal invasive technology steered by different imaging modalities (MRI, CT, etc.). Two projects which are currently running are related to the positioning of needles in tumours for biopsy and ablation of cancer cells.

In a new project, we want to develop a steerable guidewire for endovascular applications. Currently, guidewires are used for all kinds of endovascular procedures like placing stents, coils or doing embolizations. However, the guidewires that are used nowadays are not steerable or too thick to be used in small vessels.

Together with a partner company in Enschede, DEMCON has ideas to come up with a new concept for a small and steerable guidewire. This concept incorporates a helical structure build from memory metal with a tether inside. By pulling the tether, the distal end of the guidewire will be bend and rotated. This allows for more precise steering of the guidewires and allows the physician for a better control of his procedure.

Assignment

Although a general concept has been identified, we need a better understanding of the behaviour of the guidewire as a result of its morphology in order to generate the best design and have the most optimal control over the two degrees of freedom (rotation and bending). On the one hand, this can (partly) be done by modelling. On the other hand, part of the project will involve building guidewires to validate the modelling and test the guidewires in real live.

During the assignment, you will be helped and supervised by both DEMCON and employees and by the group of precision engineering.

We offer

DEMCON offers a dynamic, growing and innovative organisation. With our complex projects and multidisciplinary teams we offer you a lot of challenge and variety in this position. Thanks to enthusiastic and committed colleagues, our working atmosphere is good, open and informal, with a flat organizational structure.
